Telecom Italia to cut domestic costs by 40% by 2015 Posted: 07 Jun 2008 06:42 AM CDT
When you have operating costs of 2 billion EUR ($3.1 billion) per year, it’s only obvious you want to cut them down. Telecom Italia acknowledged this problem and is embarking on a wide-ranging cost cutting strategy to reduce the expenditure. The goal is to cut a total of 40% of cost base within the next seven years in order to boost the company’s profitability. One of the ideas is to invest in optical fibre infrastructure that would require less maintenance while providing higher service quality. In addition, cuts will be made across Telecom Italia’s customer service, advertising and marketing efforts. But it’s not all about the cost cutting, Telecom Italia also eyes expansion in other markets. The company’s chief executive Franco Bernabe said he is in talks with private-equity partners to co-finance international deals, to help Italy’s largest operator expand its overseas operations through smaller joint-ventures in developing countries. According to Financial Times, TI’s share price has fared worse than other European incumbent telcos this year, falling almost 35%. [Via: FT] —

Orange’s CEO discusses UK strategy Posted: 07 Jun 2008 06:14 AM CDT
The changes will result in 500 new jobs in customer service and retail by the end of the year and a reduction of up to 450 positions in administration, management and support functions. 60 new stores will be opened across the country to add to the existing 338 outlets. Orange also plans to improve coverage by rolling out 450 new 2G base stations, while at the same time investing further in the faster networks. Next year, the mobile operator will launch its super-fast 14Mbps mobile network. “If you look at sales of dongles (mobile Internet) at the moment, it’s a great growth area. Now, people are expecting Internet access wherever they are and that’s where we think we’ve got a great advantage in having fixed and mobile,” Alexander told reporters on a conference call. NTT DoCoMo buys 30% of Bangladesh’s Aktel for $425 million Posted: 07 Jun 2008 05:40 AM CDT
It’s not just the Chinese telecom industry that’s consolidating. Large operators constantly eye emerging markets for expansion. That being said, Japanese leading operator NTT DoCoMo has sealed a deal to buy the 30% stake of Bangladesh’s third largest mobile operator Aktel, which has 7.4 million subscribers as of end Q1 2008. According to Reuters, DoCoMo has beaten competition from Vodafone, and will pay about $425 million for the 30% stake. The remaining 70% of Aktel is owned by Telekom Malaysia International. Bangladesh is the sixth fastest-growing market in Asia Pacific region, with a year-on-year connections growth rate of 60% as of end of the first quarter of this year. Earlier in 2008, DoCoMo has raised its stake in Philippine Long Distance Telephone and bought a stake in U Mobile, an unlisted firm partly owned by Malaysian tycoon Vincent Tan. [Via: Reuters] —

Leaked 3G iPhone pics hit the web - iPhone 2 to get video chat, available in Red… maybe Posted: 07 Jun 2008 04:04 AM CDT Cue the dramatic music, please. Last year, around the time the iPhone was originally announced, iPhone mockups and allegedly leaked images flooded the web. This year, things are different. Apple’s WWDC 2008 is so close we can almost taste the geeked-out sweat from the throngs of Apple fans and haters itching to get their first peek at Apple’s next-generation iPhone. And, you know what that means. 3G iPhone rumors are really getting out of hand.
The newest 3G iPhone rumor to hit the i’nets involves allegedly leaked marketing materials showing “real deal” pictures of Apple’s iPhone successor, the iPhone 2 or iPhone 3G, if you will. From the looks of the leaked pics, iPhone hopefuls have to look forward to their 3G iPhone rocking video chat, and it’ll be available in a nice, bright shade of Red. The iPhone 3G looks thicker than the current iPhone, which is in line with the “thicker” 3G iPhone rumors. But, the tapered edges are way thinner than the current iPhone, which is in line with the “thinner” 3G iPhone rumors. Both rumors satisfied at once? Nice. That is, if these pics are legit.
We’re seeing the iPhone 3G sporting the tapered-edge design that’s been widely expected for a good while now. There’s also a pleasantly surprising front-facing video call camera, and pictures showing a 3G video call in progress. Now, is all that and the new “RED” color option on the real? Well, a few blogs have picked up on these “leaked” images that were forwarded to TechCrunch. Some are holding these pics as truth, while others are calling foul. If TechCrunch’s “tipster” is on point, we’re not only going to see some serious specs on the next-generation iPhone, but we’ll be getting some iChat video support for Windows XP. That’s right, Windows XP.
On the flip-side, others are calling these “leaked” pics a bunch of hooey. The images are said to be the Photoshop-work of some talented designer. The “real” iPhone 3G reportedly lacks any sort of front-facing camera - that extra “optical sensor” apparently won’t be taking any video or pictures. So, who’s right and who’s wrong? We have no idea, but these pics sure are pretty to look at, aren’t they? Keep in mind that last year we saw iPhone mockups left and right, but none were of this caliber. Did Apple drop the ball the second time around? Or is this the same old story, happening all over again? Suffice it to say that, just days before the official 3G iPhone announcement, we still know little more than we did months ago. —

Apple clinches No. 3 spot in global smartphone market, RIM sees crazy growth, Nokia easily No. 1 Posted: 06 Jun 2008 03:36 PM CDT With the highly-anticipate and quite polarizing Apple iPhone on the verge of making its second-generation debut next week, a new research report from Gartner has surfaced. The report puts Apple, with just a single iPhone model to boast of, in the No. 3 spot among global smartphone vendors for Q1 2008. Cupertino took broke into the “Top 3″ in the smartphone market with 1.7 million iPhones sold since it’s debut last year. It seems that the iPhone is seen globally as a competent smartphone capable of competing with the best - even with all it’s faults. With increasing awareness among consumers of the smartphone segment and a strong sales push from carriers looking to increase their ARPU (Average Revenue Per User), the smartphone market has highlighted growth in the mobile phone industry. And, the ever increasing smartphone market seems to have helped Apple come in behind smartphone makers Nokia and RIM. Nokia took an astounding 45.2% (14.58 million units) of global smartphone sales, with RIM, makers of the ever-popular push-emailing BlackBerry lineup, garnering 13.4% (4.31 million units) of all smartphone sales.
Compared to the same period last year, smartphone sales grew 29%, with 32.2 million smartphones sold in the first quarter. The growing market didn’t just help Apple, Nokia saw a 25.3% growth in smartphone sales in Q1. But, the most remarkable growth numbers belong to RIM - the BlackBerry maker increased smartphone sales by 107.3%. So, will Apple’s next-generation iPhone be enough to not only meet its goal of moving 10 million units by the end of 2008, but also overtake the BlackBerry as the most sought-after smartphone? If Apple manages to right all the wrongs that current-generation iPhone users have been complaining of, the 3G iPhone will most likely do better in the next few months than it the past year. We’ll have to wait and see. [Via: Apple Insider] —

O2: HTC Touch Pro (Raphael) will be an XDA handset Posted: 06 Jun 2008 02:15 PM CDT
Thankfully, O2 has decided to leave HTC’s design work alone - for the most part. The O2-branded HTC Touch Pro will apparently look just like all those HTC Raphael press shots, but with a soft-touch rear panel replacing HTC’s handy-work. So, it looks like German’s will have to decide between T-Mobile or O2, depending on just how important that slide-out keyboard is to them. [Via: the::unwired] —

Apple working on 2.8- and 3.2-inch iPhone? Thinner and thicker iPhone in the works? Posted: 06 Jun 2008 01:57 PM CDT Some rumors suggest that the 3G iPhone will launch with a casing that’s thicker than the current iPhone and others point toward Apple’s next-generation iPhone sporting a thinner casing. It’s all muddled in a fantastically confusing pool of 3G iPhone rumors that almost makes your head hurt. And, to make sure that pain doesn’t subside anytime soon, iLounge has posted pictures of what seem to be the 3G iPhone’s touchscreen. The thing is, there’s two of them - and they come in two different sizes. The pictures are allegedly from Host Technology, a Taiwanese company claiming to be providing the touchscreen components for Apple’s next-generation iPhone. The company claims that their touchscreen is superior to the Balda-sourced touchscreens in the current iPhone in that Host’s “projected capacitance touch panels” won’t lose sensitivity over time and is more resistant to high-humidity environments and water.
There are 3.2-inch and 2.8-inch versions of the Host touch panels reportedly ready to pull duty in Apple’s iPhone lineup. But, the prevailing consensus is that the 2.8-inch panels (if they are legit) won’t be seeing the light of day on any 3G iPhone, but will most likely be part of an iPhone Nano or future iterations of the iPhone. Now, here’s the interesting bit. The 3.2-inch touchscreen could indicate that Apple has indeed shaved some significant mass from the current iPhone and will be launching the 3G iPhone in a more svelte and sleek package. On the flip-side, the 3.2-inch touchscreen might be destined for the 3G iPhone with a thicker casing, while the 2.8-inch touch panel could be used in a smaller iPhone without 3G. If true, those competing rumors that the next-generation iPhone will be thicker or thinner than the current iPhone could each be referring to different next-gen iPhone models. Could we see a smaller iPhone, lacking 3G and priced at $200, get announced on June 9? Time will tell, and the wait is getting unbearable at this point. [Via: iLounge] —

FCC unveils HTC CONV100 - T-Mobile Shadow II? Posted: 06 Jun 2008 01:13 PM CDT
We’re hearing that the T-Mobile Shadow II (2) should hit market with WiFi, Bluetooth, and an improved battery (1100mAh). And, the T-Mobile Shadow 2 could very well launch with Windows Mobile 6.1 in tow, giving it the guts to compete on the same level as other higher-end smartphone offerings scheduled to drop in the near future. Of course, we’re still way too early in the T-Mobile Shadow 2’s development cycle to be privy to any pricing and availability information. Sit tight, kiddies, T-Mobile’s hopefully going to launch this thing soon. Anyone else feeling the white-clad T-Mobile Shadow II more than the Black version?
